Poached Dates
(Serves 2)
- 8 dates
- 1 cup good red table wine
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- Dash cinnamon
- Dash nutmeg
- 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
For Garnish:
- Dark chocolate baking bar
- Coconut, lightly toasted
Combine water and wine in a medium-sized saucepan; bring to boil and then lower heat and simmer.
Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Stir to incorporate completely.
Add dates and let simmer for about 8 minutes, until soft and fragrant. Remove dates from wine and place on serving plate.
Stir butter into wine and continue to simmer until reduced by half. Pour over dates.
Garnish with toasted coconut and, if so inclined, chocolate shavings. (A microplane zester will work nicely for shaving chocolate).

The worst part about your weekend isn’t the drinking alone. It isn’t even the Tina Turner (jk). It’s that there’s no one there to eat your food! What’s a girl supposed to do? Go extra heavy with the toasted coconut and shaved pear-infused chocolate, I guess. : ) You IM?
P.S. I hit Plattsburgh’s new Thai restaurant last night and couldn’t help thinking of what fodder my experience there would be for your blog!
